Nisha Kunju (Administrator & PRO : PAWS-Mumbai)

Recently Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan - Mumbai Zoo Management plan to organize the series of events to commemorate the Jubilee this year 2012 after missing out last year. Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) written an letter to Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai Commissioner Subodh Kumar requesting him kindly improve the state of affairs at the Zoo, rather than spend efforts and public’s funds for this “celebrations”. The proposed celebrations of the 150 Years of VJB Udyan - Mumbai Zoo would be worthless as the project has been delayed by more than a year and also that there is nothing worthwhile to showcase as its achievements.

The years of its existence the Zoo and its inhabitants have not been kept in proper manner. The animals’ (including birds and reptiles) were never cared for neither well nor was the environment suitable for well-being of these animals. There are several reports on its unhygienic conditions, ill-treatment of animals and birds submitted by the various Animal Welfare / Rights NGO’s.

PAWS-Mumbai also written to Director of Postal Department G.P.O Mumbai & Chairman  Postal Services Board New Delhi requesting them not to releasing any postal stamp to mark 150 Years celebrations of the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan - Mumbai Zoo.

PAWS-Mumbai also plan to design a post cards to oppose the Jubilee celebration and which will be send to zoo director by animal lovers by signing it.
