PAWS-Mumbai an animal welfare organization filled an written complaint with police and forest department against owner of the elephant which is been used for begging at Kandivali

Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai an animal welfare organization lodged a written Complaint with Kandivali Police Station and Range Forest Office, Mumbai against using of Indian Elephant for begging purpose in crowded area at Kandivali (West) and nearby areas. As the Indian Elephant is listed at S.N.12-B in Schedule – 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2002 and as per the circular of Chief Conservator of Forest Thane, No.D-8(4)/WLP/OW/128/07-08, Thane 400 603, Dated 24/7/2007 it is illegal to is brought this elephant within the limits of Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and Thane Municipal Corporation. 

Not only mahout uses this elephant for begging purpose but also they are selling the hair of elephant tail and also uses for joy ride too. This kind of activities carried by Elephant owners is violation of Section 2(7A) read with Section 2 (39) 38H, 43 and 42 of Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2002; Wildlife Protection Act 1972; Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 ; Performing Animals Rules, 1973 & 2001; Indian Penal Code 1860; Bombay Police Act 1951. So we at PAWS-Mumbai requested the Police as well as the Forest Department to register an FIR against the owner in this case said Sunish Subramanian Kunju, Hony. Animal Welfare Officer of Animal Welfare Board of India and activist of PAWS-Mumbai.

It is the duty of the person who owned the elephant should carry or have all necessary document like Ownership Certificate, Transit Permit, Medical Fitness Certificate from and authorized Veterinarian, Certificate of Implantation of Microchip, Elephant Insurance Policy, etc but owner not having any such proper documents during usage in public. The ownership is give only to keep it as Pet, but this owner are violating the laws and using it for commercial purpose.

Recently Bijli a 60 Year Old Elephant met with accident and fighting for survival, which is in critical condition at Mulund as she was also forced to beg for years in the streets of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, without any proper diet and medical care. In 2006 a female elephant that was injured in a road accident as it was hit by a speed water tanker on streets at Chembur and later died.
