Sand Boa rescued from Goregaon Aarey Colony busy road

MUMBAI : Goregaon Aarey Colony Road is very busy with traffic and a snake came in the middle of road due to vehicles have been stop and traffic jam had happened, Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) received a call from an animal lover and Snake Rescuer Sunish Subramanain Kunju who reached the spot and have rescued the snake safely following to a call received from Chandramani Yadav.  It was Red Sand Boa, the non – venomous snake as its movement is very slow so it was taking time to cross the busy road. Its good sigh that people have stopped the vehicle to save the snake said Sunish. Later the snake was released back into natural habitat in undisclosed area after informing to forest department said Nisha Kunju Administrator of PAWS-Mumbai.

Fact about Red San Boa / Indian Sand Boa / John's Earth Boa : Its thick rounded body in red color, short, blunt tail whose head looks similar to trail and small eyes have vertical pupils so it is been called as two headed Snake.  Recently it have been seen poaching and smuggling of this species, believed to have medicinal properties, continue in part of the country and  it also have blind faith they hold a great value in the regions prominent religion as far as being “Luck” or “Promising wealth” to whomever owns this species said Sunish.

Sunish added Boa’s are also treated especially horribly during Mahashivratri and Nagpanchami festival. Snakes charmers make ‘eyes and a mouth’ by burning holes in their tails with a match stick, and then they put hot wax in those holes and claim that they have two heads. Boa is protected species under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and torturing or causing pain or suffering is an offence under Prevention of cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Its name in different languages : Hindi Do-Muhi (famous by this name in most of Northern India) | Marathi Mandil or Mandool | Gujrati Andhali Chakan or Damoi | Malayalam Erattathalayan, Eruthalayan, Mandalipampu or Enna Pampu.
