NEW DELHI : Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) Founder Sunish Subramanian Kunju and Activist Nisha Subramanian Kunju received Gates & Custodian - Person of the Year 2013, an international award for accomplishment under Humanities – Environment category from the hands of Member of Parliament - Rajya Sabha Smt. Mohsina Kidwai at Indian Islamic Culture Center, New Delhi along with other winners like Sushil Kumar – Sports, Miss Iran 2009 Melica Amina – International, Poonam Anand – Kargil War Hero, Rita Rai – Television (Female), Rajeev Bhardwaj – Television (Male), Dr. Rama Mukherjee – Science & Technology were few of them.
Sunish Subramanian Kunju is a young wildlife and environment activist, having delicate more than 15 years for the conservation of city wildlife in and around Mumbai. Sunish began work for this cause since he was in school. In 2002 he founder NGO Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai, In 2003, he was appointed as Hony. Animal Welfare Officer by Animal Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India and also by Committee to Monitor Animal Welfare Laws in Maharashtra which is appointed by Hon. Bombay Hight Court. In 2009 Thane Forest Department recognized him as Snake Friend. By seeing his work he was received many national, international and global awards. Recently Sunish was selected as Spotlight individual making a difference at the Sanctuary Wildlife Awards 2013 for work to stop the illegal captivity of birds and animals to demonstrate how individual action can and will make a difference.
Nisha Subramanian Kunju since childhood she use to observe her brother taking care of injured animals and birds, Nisha got motivated to follow the footsteps. In 2005, she was appointed as Animal Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India. By seeing her work she was honored with national and global awards.
While talking about their future plan they said to setup a small center cum clinic, where our team at PAWS - Mumbai can keep, treat and take care of injured birds and animals and to start a small charitable dispensary for animals which is today’s need and it’s my dream too.
