PAWS-Mumbai is celebrating SPARROW FEST 2014

To mark WORLD SPARROW DAY – INDIA, Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) organise SPARROW FEST 2014 and invite nomination for Sparrow Friend Award 2014, Sparrow Drawing, Poem & Story from Student community and Sparrow Photographs from Citizens which includes Photo Journalist before 1 March 2014 and winners will be honored on 20^th March.

Since 2011, As part of Sparrow Conservation Mission, Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) team under the supervision of Sunish Subramanian Kunju celebrates 20th March as WORLD SPARROW DAY – INDIA and organise various events like sparrow drawing, poem and story writing competition for school students and sparrow photography competition for photo journalist, nature photographers and citizens to spread awareness about the drastic decline in the number of sparrows over the years. The winners of the various competition were awarded with PAWS-MUMBAI AWARD which is powered by Apeejay Karmayuga - The Right every Wrong Generation- a campaign instituted by iCONGO to democratize heroism and  Karmaveer Chakra- a medallion for voluntary action instituted in 2009 by iCONGO, in association with the UN. From this year iCONGO, in partnership with Apeejay Surrendra group, shall be Democratising Heroism under Karmayuga by initiating a collaborative awards program in partnership with Companies, Academic Institutes, NGOs, Government bodies, Media Houses, RWAs, etc. Apeejay Karmayuga has collaborated with PAWS-Mumbai to motivate school students to create awareness about the declining number of sparrows and the need to conserve the species. In these event more than 1000 students, youths and common citizen takes part every year from different states of India, this event is supported by various national and international record agencies and also by NGO’s.

PAWS-Mumbai believes that such events will sensitise children about the sparrow and its fight for survival, when a student will draw the image or write a story / poem of the sparrow, they will be prompted to research on the bird. Along with him/her, their parents and teachers will also understand about the gravity of the issue.

PAWS-Mumbai also salutes the people who have been actively involved in sparrow conservation work by honoring with Sparrow Friend Award. In addition from this year SPARROW FRIEND AWARD will be given in two Categories that is “Individual and Group”. Any citizen or housing society can apply for Sparrow Friend Award 2014, any individual who had made their contribution in the field of Sparrow Conservation in their personal level can apply for “Individual Category” and any housing society, colony, corporate house as part of CSR can apply for “Group Category”. Applicant should tell their sparrow conservation story with necessary evidence like photographs, etc.

Other events like artificial nest box, feeder and water bowl adoption camps and launching of awareness posters are been organised.

On August 12, 2008 PAWS-Mumbai team under the supervision of Sunish Subramanian Kunju have first to expose the trade of house Sparrow at Crawford Market in Mumbai. It turned out to be one of the India’s biggest illegal animal selling market and it also solved one of the mystery behind the missing sparrows in Mumbai.

As per hakims in Bhendi Bazar and Pydhonie in Mumbai, sparrow meat mixed another herb seems to be increasing the male sex drive. Sparrow meat is being used as an aphrodisiac since the Mughal era and this therapy still continues. If you go to any hakim shop in Pydhonie in Mumbai and ask for an aphrodisiac, he will ask you to purchase a fleshy male sparrow from Crawford Market in order to prepare a mixture with the meat and other herbs to enhance the male sex drive. Their after PAWS-Mumbai launched “Sparrow Conservation Mission”.

PAWS-Mumbai initiated Sparrow Conservation Mission - SCM under the supervision of Sunish Subramanian Kunju, after studying that all major developing cities from worldwide are witnessing the decline in the count of sparrow population. Once this little sparrow lovely chirping voice was the morning alarm for all of us, but now it had been replaced by electrical bells. What is the reason behind it? We human destroyed the habitat of them under the name of beautification or development; we replaced our old type home into buildings & skyscrapers, small shops into mall & shopping centers, cut trees for widening of road or making parking place, due to which sparrows lost their everything that is home (nest), food as well as the place where they use to play and we use to enjoy their movements. And other reason is the mobile towers which release microwave radiation, it not only affect this little sparrow but also our health too.

PAWS-Mumbai and its band of young volunteers have designed an artificial nest, which is made up of recycled wood and named it as “My Sparrow Home”, Ideally, food should be provided to birds, but in winter and summer, the birds need our helping hands more as their natural food and water sources decrease. Feeding birds in My Sparrow Feeder helps in maintaining hygiene, avoids wastage of grains, and helps birds get a continuous source of food all the year. And My Water Bowl to provide clean water to them, as it is very important for them.

Animal Welfare Officer informed the officers ...of forest department (Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) West Region : Suresh Thorat, Chief Conservator of Forest Thane : K.P. Singh, Deputy Chief Conservator of Forest Thane : Anwar Ahmed, Range Forest Officer Mumbai : Anil Toradmal) and also trace out the location by following the elephant.

As per the information the elephant was belongs to Sabhashankar B. Pandey from Dahisar and was using it for the annual festival Thiru Aaratu organized by Shree Ayyappa Seva Sangham Powai – Powai Ayyappa Temple. While Forest Staff recoding the statement of Mahout and Organiser, the owner Sabhashankar Pandey along with around 10 -15 People including his son Saresh Pandey (29) reached the spot, later he started creating issue and stated assaulted, threated the activist Sunish Subramanian Kunju. While activist call-up Police Control Helpline100 and on the ways to Police Station Saresh Pandey and his people attacked the activist. In this regards complaint was registered at Powai Police Station (NC No. 173/14 Dated 14.01.2014 Under Section 506, 323) by Sunish Subramanian Kunju.

As per the information received since 2 weeks the elephants been seen using it for begging at Dahisar, As per the Circular dated 28th October 2013 of Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) West Region states that “The Elephant is listed at S. No. 12 – B in Schedule – 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2002. The Elephant is often brought within the city limits of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. These elephants are brought in to : give joy ride, beg; entertain Guests at wedding; act in serials and movies; bless and entertain guests at functions at temples and political rallies. All of the activities carried out by the Elephant are in contravention with the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972”.

On October 17, 2013 Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai team lead by Abhhijeet Rane and Sunish Subramanian Kunju met Chief Conservator of Forests – Thane Shri. K. P. Singh (IFS) to submit SAVE JUMBO Citizen Report along with Protest Letter from Member of Parliament Shri. Sanjay Dina Patil, Shri. Sanjay Nirupam and Shri. Sanjeev Ganesh Naik, Member of Legislative Assembly Shri. Krishna Hegde, Maharashtra Legislative Council Shri. Charan Singh Sapra, Municipal Councilor Shri. Pravin Chheda, NGO’s Parivartan Pratishthan, Abhijeet Rane Youth Foundation and Ankur Pratishthan, Dhadak Kamgar Union and with 100 letters from animal lovers across the citizen demanding total banning of Elephants into the limit of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and entire Jurisdiction of CCF Thane with immediate effect by implementation of Existing Animal Welfare Laws as per our Constitution of India. There was 30 minutes discussion on the various issue in the presence of Deputy Conservator of Forests- Thane Shri. Anwar Ahmed and Divisional Forest Officer – Vigilence Shri. H. G. Dhumal. PAWS-Mumbai also requested to register FIR/ Action under Wildlife (Protection) Act for been seen violating the laws by using the elephants for begging without any proper care action should be taken against owner of 2 Elephants (Laxmi – Female – Age 25 Years and Rupkali – Female – Age 30 Years) Mr. Sabhashankar B. Pandey and to send the elephant to rehabilitation Center.

 MUMBAI : Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) an NGO working for conservation of flora and fauna in and around Mumbai opposed two major projects proposed by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. In letters addressing to Municipal Commissioner and Superintendent of Gardens – MCGM and copy of which have send to Hon’ble Minister for Environment and Forest – Govt. of India, Hon’ble Minister for Environment - Govt. of Maharashtra and other consent authority.

PAWS-Mumbai Activist Sunish Subramanian Kunju said it’s high time for us to save flora and fauna in Mumbai, as we are day by day losing our green cover areas some under the name of beautification, development and other reasons, why the authority is not thinking of flora and fauna. Mumbai Municipal Corporation is failed to maintain Mumbai Zoo, we as a citizen of Mumbai witness the death of animals there every years. Beside that now Municipal Corporation is planning to develop Birds Sanctuary or Park is Powai Mumbai so we have opposed both the projects.

Below is the Letter which we have sent in related to Strong objections to the proposed development of "Bird Sanctuary / Park" at Powai or in Mumbai

This is to lodge our strong objections against the proposed construction of two "Bird Sanctuaries / Park" in Powai or in Mumbai.

We fail to understand the logic of such a project which entails buying birds - local and exotic and then imprisoning them in cages for the viewing "pleasure" of citizens and tourists.  This surely would be an encouragement to the poaching mafia which would get activated to procure these birds from the wild by laying traps, apprehending them and transporting them to the city for retaining them in cages.

This is against the order of nature and against the various wildlife protection laws.  

We do not see any advantage for executing these project since it entails catching birds, caging them, constructing large cages etc all at public expense.  Who benefits from these projects? No one but the poaching mafia, the developers of these cages and "sanctuaries" and everyone else involved in sanctioning the funds in the govt. who suffers? The citizens and the birds. Such project just benefits the builders to increase the property value. 

We urge you to kindly re-consider these projects in the larger interest of the citizens and the poor birds and animals. Kindly call us for a hearing before you decide to take any further steps on these projects.

Below is the Letter which we have sent in related to Strong protest against proposed chopping of more than 400 trees for the water pipeline laying / replacing project at Bhandup Complex.

We wish to lodge our strong protest against the proposed chopping of more than 400 trees during the execution of the above project.  As per the information received and from the newspaper reports it is apparent that no study, survey or application of mind has been done during the planning stage in order to save the trees and or plant sufficient number of trees in the vicinity of the project prior to chopping of the trees.

This is against the interest of the citizens and the greenery which is badly needed to retain the value of the Sanjay Gandhi National park - SGNP which attracts multitude of birds, animals, insects and has its own ecosystem.  The presence of SGNP in the vicinity of Mumbai is boon to Mumbaiites. The Park attracts clouds due to which Mumbai is blessed with adequate rainfall during monsoon and thus gets enough water for use of its inhabitants.

So we request you to seek objections, suggestions on this project and then execute this project with adequate care so as to do minimum harm to the flora and fauna in the project area.

We request you to kindly call us for a hearing before you take any further steps on this project.

 In past PAWS-Mumbai have given Suggestion “Need for displaying detail of trees along with Plot no. and CTS no. in every residential / commercial building” to MCGM Tree Authority on 19 Aug 2013 and in this regards Mumbai Mayor Mr. Sunil Pradhu have also written a letter on 10 September 2013 to Superintendent of Gardens / Tree Office in this regards but till now we have not received any response of the authority or our suggestion have put-up in Tree Authority Committee Meeting or NOT.

3 January 2013 Friday | BHANDUP : Kalpesh Pate (12) Student of Parag English School Bhandup and a Student Member of Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) while returning from school, he spotted a plastic bag which is been attacking by Cats in Dustbin near his school, he stopped and observe it closely, while he saw White Rat’s which have been thrown and which is attacked by cats. He immediately went and rescued those White Rats and brought it to PAWS-Mumbai, where it had been given bath, food to eat and kept under observation said Hony. Animal Welfare Officer, Sunish Subramanian Kunju.

Sunish further said this kind of cruel act is a punishable offence under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and it’s an inhuman act but we are very happy to see this young boy not only rescue but also given this lovely creature a home by adopting it.

I was very surprised to see such a beautiful and lovely creature have been thrown in plastic bag, if I have not seen it may have die due to suffocation or cats may killed them. They are very playful and it’s easy to keep it at home freely, so I have adopted its said Kalpesh.

People buy animals like Rabbits, Rats, Turtles and even Cats, Dogs when they are very small  from pet shops, but we seen many cases where, when it become bigger or sick they are been abundant on streets to die said PAWS-Mumbai Administrator Nisha Kunju.

Elephants who are been illegally or legally brought out from natural habitat of forests they are separated from their parents in very small age. Later they are been used for begging on streets, performing in circus or kept in Zoos for amusement, elephant festivals.

As per the law the Indian elephant is listed at S. No. 12-B in Schedule–1 of The Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2002 and we Indian consider the elephant as a GOD, then who we can tolerate such cruelty on Elephants.

LETTER TO MAHARASHTRA CM

Subject          :          NEED to set-up guideline to STOP Cruelty on Elephants in the state of Maharashtra by private owned Elephants owners who bring the Elephants from other states. Demand Total Banning of Elephants into the limit of Maharashtra State with immediate effect by implementation of Existing Animal Welfare Laws as per our Constitution of India

Dear Sir,

Our father of nation Mahatma Gandhi said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” and we Indian believe Elephant as a God, but recent death of “Bijli / Ramu” elephant in Mulund, Mumbai (Maharashtra) which we strongly believe is due to use of elephants on streets, crowded area, joy rides, use in marriage ceremonies and other commercial purpose by their owner without any proper diet & health care. Bijli is not the first Elephant who has died, in 2006, an elephant “Roopkali / Laskhmi” too died after being hit by speeding water tanker on the streets of Chembur, Mumbai (Maharashtra).

The Indian Elephant is listed at S. No. 12-B in Schedule – 1 of The Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2002. As in Maharashtra there are not habitats for elephants, so they are brought to Maharashtra from other states by road ways on foot. Such elephants are taken away from their natural habitats and forcibly separated from their parents at young age and thus illegally (maybe legally) brought to towns for commercial purposes. Can they be given requisite permissions like ownership certificate & transit permit by Forest Department and allowed to bring to towns for commercial purpose? We strongly believe not a single elephants in Maharashtra is covered by Elephant Insurance Policy nor having Certificate of Implantation of Microchip which is the duty of Forest Department to track the movement of such animals and even not have any data base of the elephants owned by private people too. No forest check post staff is keeping a watch of Elephants which are coming into state of Maharashtra from other State.

We learned that all Elephants owners have failed to provide elephant sufficient food, water or shelter as most of the elephants are seen resting under bridge, side of roads at night or other public place and even failing to provide health care because in Maharashtra there is No Private or Animal Husbandry Veterinary Doctor who can treat elephants. Elephants are not given sufficient exercise too. Such walking on town’s streets for food and money cannot surly be called “exercise”. In Maharashtra, Elephant become money making business equipment for their owners and 2009 PAWS-Mumbai written a Suggestion letters to all the law enforcement authority but not received any response from them. If timely action have been taken against this private owners we have possible to see “Bijli / Ramu” and “Roopkali / Laskhmi” alive.

Above all the activities carried out by these owners are violating various animal welfare laws like Section 2(7A) read with Section 2 (39) 38H, 43 and 42 of Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2002; Wildlife Protection Act 1972; Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Transport of Animals on Foot) Rules 2001; Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960; Performing Animals Rules, 1973 & 2001; Indian Penal Code 1860. But even after compliant to the Officers of Forest Department not action are been take against the owners.

So, we as a citizen of India and animal welfare / rights organisation, demand to you as a HEAD of law enforcement authority to TOTAL BAN on Elephants (include bringing for festivals) transit into the limit of Maharashtra State with immediate effect by implementation of the existing laws as per our Constitution of India. It’s time we common citizen, public representative and our future citizen student and youths should come forward to SAVE JUMBO.

Our observation …..…
 

Ø  The Elephants are made to walk for long distance without adequate food and water on Tar road.

Ø  The Elephants are made to walk long distance at night time too.

Ø  The Elephants cause traffic jam while they are being taken from one place to another.

Ø  The noise due to vehicular traffic and crackers increase the stress levels of the Elephants.

Ø  The Elephants do not get proper medical treatment by their handler when they become sick or injured.

Ø  Minor children are made to sit over Elephants and beg along with these animals.

Ø  It is hazardous to make the Elephants walk in public as they may come in “Musth”, thus risking the life and property of citizen.

Ø  The handlers / owners of the Elephants themselves are poor. Thus it is very unlikely that they would be able to feed or taken proper care of these meg-herbivores who require adequate food and medication to live well.

Ø  The owner sells the tail hairs as good – luck charms.

Ø  It’s seen the Forest Department have no control over private owned elephant owner.

Our suggestion …….
 

Ø  Direct the Police, Local Forest Staff to take appropriate penal action against the violator, handlers or owners of these animals.

Ø  Ensure that ownership license of the handlers or owners are revoked. 

Ø  Constitute an Elephant Welfare Committee (comprising of Police, Forest officials and representative of animal welfare organizations) who would direct a team of Elephant handlers to transfer apprehended animals to hospitals / wildlife parks / Elephants Camps.

Ø  Expert “Mahouts” be made to take care of these apprehended Elephants in the National Parks / Wildlife Sanctuaries and paid for the same.

Ø  Direct the Police Commissioner and Chief Conservator of Forests to educate all their subordinates about the laws concerning the welfare and Elephants and other animals.

Ø  Make the officials manning the various check-posts (of Police, BMC and Forest Departments) to prevent entry of unauthorized animals into city limit.

Ø  Seize the elephants which are made to beg on the streets and transfer them to the nearest forest (such as “Sanjay Gandhi National Parks” etc.). The mahout can be sent with elephant and use it for patrolling, tourism etc. The mahout would be better off in such National Parks as they would not have to walk on our tarred/ concrete roads and also that they would be taken care of by the medical team of such Parks.

Ø  Kindly ensure that mahout should given some sort of employment as per their expertise in the forest or elsewhere. They could be given the job of care and welfare of such elephants.

Ø  Funding of such “elephant camp” in National Parks should be funded by Project Elephants / Central Zoo Authority (CZA) / State Forest Department.
 

In the larger interest of the mute and suffering animals, we request you as a Head of law enforcement authority to take urgent steps to prevent abuse and ill-treatment of such animals. If timely action will not taken from your side in future we have to see more “Bijli / Ramu” and “Roopkali / Laskhmi” dying on streets of Maharashtra.
