PRESS Release by

I was shocked to see it -- Sofia Hayat
Sofia observing the rescued turtle in plastic bag
Hollywood Actress Sofia Hayat, who is associated with animal welfare & rights NGO Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai as a Patron, was recently in Thane at Hiranandani area, while she spotted few boys taking a turtle in plastic transparent bag, I was shocked to see it. I stopped my car and have talk with those boys, I learned that they are taking it to keep it as pet at home, I convinced them and taken the turtle. Till that time I informed the PAWS-Mumbai Rescued team who reached the spot said Sofia.

It’s a Red Eared Slider Turtle, which is not a native species of India, but it’s illegally sale in Indian pet markets. Due to which it is easily available to public who keep it as pet. There is many blind faith behind keeping it as a pet, few of the reason are Good Luck, Fengshui and Vastu. As it is not native species so we can’t release it in natural pond where our native species found, we are planning to send it to rehabilitation center said Sunish Subramanian of PAWS-Mumbai.

Red Eared Slider Turtle
enjoying the FREEDOM
About Red Eared Slider Turtle

Red-eared sliders are almost entirely aquatic, but leave the water to bask in the sun and lay eggs. These reptiles are deceptively fast and are also decent swimmers. They hunt for prey and will attempt to capture it when the opportunity presents itself. They are aware of predators and people, and generally shy away from them. The red-eared slider is known to frantically slide off rocks and logs when approached.

Contrary to the popular misconception, red-eared sliders do not have saliva. They, like most aquatic turtles, have fixed tongues, so they must eat their food in water.

If you come across any such incident or wildlife trade do call PAWS-Mumbai Helpline 9833480388 or E-mail at pawsmumbai@gmail.com, the name of informer will be kept confident. You can also inform about it to nearest Forest Office too.

Noble initiative to save environment

Tuesday, January 24, 2012
PRESS Release by
Nisha Kunju (Administrator & PRO : PAWS-Mumbai)

Kirti D Shah giving first recycle flex bag to
Environmentalist & PAWS-Mumbai
Founder Sunish Subramanian Kunju
Bhandup resident Kirti D Shah has come out with an innovative concept of re-using the flex-vinyl banners which are found discarded after its use.  He has arranged to use the flex material to prepare carry bags for his customers.  He has a "farsan" shop named Swastik Farsan at Bhandup, where till now he uses to provide a cloth or paper bags or plastic bags above 50 microns to his customers. As per the Municipal guidance to the shopkeeper have to officially charge for the carry bag.  He felt that daily there are scores of political and commercial banners which are freely discarded or carried away by the civic authorities who get wasted, he thought to better use rather than let it be discarded at some municipal dump and pollute the environment.

After making such bags from the wasted flex banners, he gifts it to the environment protection and animal welfare NGO - Plant and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS-Mumbai).  PAWS–Mumbai works for the conservation of environment and for the well-being of the mute and helpless stray animals.  This way PAWS-Mumbai is able to gather funds from the sale of such flex bags which are sturdy, aesthetic, washable and re-usable too.

Kirti D Shah says that "During festival season we shopkeepers are forced to give free bags to their customers. But now since it has become compulsory to charge the customers for the bags provided, I charge them for these flex bags and donate the amount to PAWS-Mumbai or directly handover these flex bags to the NGO for sale so that they too are able to generate funds for their noble work.

Secretary and Founder member of PAWS-Mumbai welcomed this initiative of Mr Kirti D Shah and feels that it is a step in the right direction.  It serves to generate funds, provide bags to the customers, curbs wastage of costly flex material and also saves our mother Earth from pollution. He further added for flex-vinyl banners scrap we will approach to Ad Agency & Political Leader’s too.

PAWS-Mumbai has requested citizens to support such environment-friendly initiatives in whichever way possible by using disposal bags like cloth and also flex bags which is recycled. To order recycle flex bag citizen can call PAWS-Mumbai on 25968314 or 9833480388.
